Dr. Jackson is co-author of the book Urban Sprawl and Public
Health. He works on the health
impacts of environmental threats, ranging from toxic substances, chemical body
burdens, terrorism, loss of resources, destructive farm policies, climate
change, and bad urban design. Over
the past decade a portion of his work has been on how the 'built environment',
including architecture and urban planning, affects health. It is this last
topic that he will speak to, the many ways that urban design impacts health -
both physical and mental - of individuals and communities.
With the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Housing and Urban Design (HUD) and
others joining the conversation that CNU has been having for 30 years, things
are really heating up.
Dr. Jackson is currently Professor and Chair of Environmental
Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at UCLA, he is a pediatrician
and public health leader. He has served as chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics
Committee on Environmental Health, as the CDC National Center for Environmental
Health’s director, as California’s state health officer, and on the Board of
Directors of the American Institute of Architects.
